A heat exchanger is an essential system designed to transfer heat between a heat source and a working fluid. Both cooling and heating processes benefit from the use of heat exchangers. These systems may keep the fluids separate with a solid wall to prevent mixing, or allow them to come into direct contact. Industrial heat exchangers are found in various applications, including refrigeration, air conditioning, sewage treatment, power stations, and chemical plants, among others. Heat is transferred by conduction through the materials of the exchanger that separate the different mediums. For instance, a shell and tube heat exchanger transports fluids through and over tubes, while an air cooled heat exchanger circulates cool air through a core of fins to effectively lower a liquid's temperature.

There are many types of heat exchangers available, primarily including shell & tube, plate type heat exchanger, air cooled heat exchanger, plate fin type, and finned tube type, among others.
